This research project was jointly led by Vrac & Cocinas, the UNESCO Chair in World Food Systems and CIRAD, with the support of a scientific committee, between May 2021 and June 2022.
It was funded by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation.
This project aimed to characterise food solidarity initiatives, led by residents of the Hérault region during the Covid-19 health crisis (across the various lockdowns), outside of traditional solidarity organisations. The aim was to understand what motivated these initiatives, to develop a typology of them, and to analyse them.
This project has yielded several results, including:
- A map of the initiatives identified, categorised by type: distribution of goods/hot meals, Collective transformed into a registered charity, Spaces for sharing and free access, Buying groups, Citizens’ collective...

ROLE OF THE CHAIR
In collaboration with Vrac & Cocinas, the Chair:
– mapped food solidarity initiatives led by residents of the Hérault region during the health crisis (across various lockdowns) that operated outside traditional solidarity institutions;
– supported the production of six videos showcasing these initiatives;
– supported the publication of a scientific article titled "Expression and development of forms of food citizenship: towards ’food commons’?"
